Professor Alan Hajek presented a keynote address at the 2025 International Academy for the Philosophy of the Sciences (AIPS) Conference in Hangzhou on 28 October. His lecture, A Chancy Theory of Counterfactuals, challenged the dominant Stalnaker-Lewis similarity framework and advanced a new probability-based account of counterfactuals. He proposed a paradigm shift for our understanding of counterfactuals in philosophy, linguistics, AI, and other areas.
Professor Hajek is internationally recognised for his work on the philosophical foundations of probability, decision theory, and the philosophy of science. His contribution at AIPS 2025 further highlighted our university’s leadership in global philosophical scholarship. More details about the event are available on the AIPS 2025 website.
