Bringing the story of a Tiwi war hero to young readers
Thursday 9 April 2026

Mavis Kerinaiua and Dr Laura Rademaker have recently collaborated to publish a new children's book. Tiwi war kwampini: Mwarlapwara kangi tingati (Tiwi War Hero: Footprints in the Sand) was published by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation for readers aged seven and over. It tells the amazing true story of Mavis's grandfather, Louie Purraputimati Munkara, who served in the Black Watch during the Second World War. The book was created as part of the ANU project 'Beyond Reconciliation: Truth-Telling for Indigenous Wellbeing'.

'Told in both Tiwi language and English, the book celebrates First Nations leadership and preserves an important chapter in Australian history.' –Books+Publishing
