Purpose

The purpose of the RSSS Cross-College Grant is to award funding of up to $30,000 (with matching or significant funding from the partner College) for researchers to develop viable research networks with ANU colleagues in the following academic areas:

College of Health & Medicine
College of Science
College of Engineering & Computer Science
College of Business & Economics

‘Significant funding from the partner College’ means funding that is an amount equal to, or greater than, 50% of the funding requested from RSSS. The funding from the partner College may be cash or in-kind funding (or any combination of the two).

The funding can be used to support a range of research platform activities including seed funding for grant development, workshops/seminars, and pilot projects.

Objectives

The main objectives of the Cross-College Grant are:

To build interdisciplinary capacity in the social sciences;
To improve RSSS capacity to address grand challenges and build research teams;
To demonstrate the importance of social scientific insights to guide technical and medical innovation;
To build RSSS research and grant capacity in line with The Rome Declaration on Responsible Research and Innovation (200KB PDF) and the ARC Science and Research Priorities (122Kb PDF); and
To contribute to the interdisciplinary community of national and international scholars in the Research School.

Application

Applicants will be academic staff who are employed by the ANU on a continuing (or continuing contingent-funded) basis, or on a fixed-term basis (provided that their current contract does not expire before the end of the current calendar year).

Applications must include:

A project proposal (c. 1000 words) demonstrating how the project will meet the objectives of the Grant;
Written commitment from the partner College (with the relevant Research School Director's signature) of the dollar value of support being contributed to the project;
A list of the investigators (at least two of whom must be from the partner College);
A one paragraph statement of each investigator's academic achievements relative to opportunity (c. 250 words) and their short-form CVs (c. 5 pages);
Endorsement from the applicant's Head of School or Centre Director; and
A budget for the proposed project that reflects the joint funding commitment from the partner College.

Only projects that have matching or significant funding from the partner College will be considered. Applicants should include both senior and early career academics, and be gender-balanced.

Criteria

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

The interdisciplinary and collaborative merit of the research project;
The quality of the investigators' academic track records, relative to opportunity; and
The impact of the project's outcomes.

The investigators will also be expected to provide a brief report at the end of the year, covering their work on the project, and its outcomes.
