Emeritus Professor Terence Hull provided an expert opinion on the tragic loss of over 100 election officials during Indonesia’s recent national poll. In an interview with ABC, Professor Hull emphasised that while the number of deaths may seem alarming, it aligns with the country’s overall mortality rate. With approximately six deaths per 1,000 population each year, the toll among poll workers is not statistically unusual.

Indonesia’s General Election Commission (KPU) meticulous record-keeping sets it apart from most other nations, capturing even natural causes of death among election staff.

Professor Hull also acknowledged the challenging conditions poll workers face, who labour tirelessly during the massive logistical exercise of election day.
