The School of History is excited to announce that Professor Martin Thomas has won the 2025 Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award for his book *Clever Men* (published by Allen & Unwin). The announcement was made by Waverley Council on November 6. Professor Thomas receives the top prize of $40,000 for his meticulously researched account of Charles Mountford’s 1948 Arnhem Land expedition, which judges praised as “exemplary historical scholarship and a captivating read.”
The judging panel consisted of Lliane Clark, a Sydney-based writer, editor, and arts producer; Julia Carlomagno, an award-winning publisher and editor; and Angela Meyer, an author and publisher.
Now in its 24th year, the Nib Award is one of Australia's most prestigious prizes for research-based literature. The Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award is administered by Waverley Council with generous support from Principal Sponsors Mark and Evette Moran, along with the ongoing commitment of community partner Gertrude and Alice Bookshop and Café.
