Workshop on Philosophy of Online Communication

The Philosophy of Online Communication workshop, held at the ANU on May 17, brought together experts from Australia and Canada to discuss the evolving challenges surrounding social media and artificial intelligence (AI).

Topics covered included: the prevalence of hate speech online, as well as the challenge of collecting data given the contested definition of the term; the point(s) of debate online; questions concerning the attribution of credibility on social media; the ethics of new forms of ‘generative’ AI; and the responsibility of social media platforms.

Speakers included Katharine Gelber (University of Queensland), Louise Richardson-Self (University of Tasmania), Regina Rini (York University), Seth Lazar (Australian National University), and Michael Barnes (Australian National University).
