On Friday 20 May 2022, the "Knowledge, Struggles and Transformations in Latin America Symposium" was held in the RSSS auditorium. The event was organised by Diana Tung (School of Archaeology and Anthropology) and Miguel Lattz (School of Sociology) with the support of the Australian National Center for Latin American Studies (ANCLAS) and the Gender Institute.

Postgraduate students from the Australian National University, the University of Queensland, and the University of Melbourne met to discuss the social issues currently facing Latin America. Topics included economic development, public health, social programs, environmental management, and civic participation. In addition, Dr. Laura Rodriguez Castro from the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation gave an outstanding keynote lecture critically examining the positionality of academics in decolonising research practices and drew on indigenous approaches in both the Latin American and Australian contexts to address power relations in research.

The organisers would like to thank ANCLAS, without whom this event would not have been possible, Maria Mendoza for all her work behind the scenes, and to all the participants and attendees for making this inaugural symposium a great success. This event shows the need for more opportunities to highlight issues in the Latin American region as well as the important linkages between Latin America and Australia.
