On 23 April 2022, ANCLAS co-sponsored and was chaired by Dr. Caroline Schuster (Co-Director of ANCLAS) of the first celebration of the Spanish Language Day, Día del Idioma Español in Australia, held at the National Library of Australia.
The event inclued the presence of the Heads of Mission of the 15 Embassies of the Spanish-speaking countries accredited to Australia: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela. We also welcomed the Director of the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney (the Spanish cultural institute), Ms. Coral Martínez Íscar.
Since 2010, the 23 April is marked as the "Día del Idioma Español en las Naciones Unidas" – Spanish Language Day by the United Nations. This event was the first Spanish Language Day in Australia, fittingly celebrated in the National Capital, at one of the premier institutions of literature and languages, and with the presence and coordination of all of the Embassies of Spanish-speaking countries accredited to Australia.
The importance of languages for Australian multiculturalism was underscored in the introductory speech by the Director-General of the National Library, Dr. Marie-Louise Ayres.
A keynote speech by His Excellency Mr. Eduardo Peña Haller, Dean of the Spanish Speaking Heads of Mission accredited to Australia, tracked the vast geographic and cultural reach of Spanish. Finally, Spanish Language Day was brought alive by the recital of refranes, or proverbs, by the Heads of Missions of the Spanish Speaking Countries. Each one of the Embassies presented a popular phrase, or common saying, to showcase the diversity of the Spanish language, its lyricism, and its regionalism.
