On 12 March 2024, the Machine Intelligence and Normative Theory (MINT) Lab, led by Professor Seth Lazar of the School of Philosophy, hosted a colloquium on Artificial Intelligence and Catastrophic Risk.

Participants discussed how seriously we should take long-term, societal-scale risks of advanced AI; how we should weigh reducing such risks against targeting more predictable near-term risks; and what we should make of the fact that major tech companies continue to develop advanced AI despite publicly acknowledging the potentially catastrophic risks this technology poses.

In addition to Professor Lazar, Dr. Cameron Domenico Kirk-Giannini (Philosophy, Rutgers Newark) and Dr. David Thorstad (Philosophy, Vanderbilt) presented their current research on these topics.
