The closing dates for Fellowship applications is 5 October 2018 (for teaching relief during semester 1, 2019). Applications will be considered, and applicants will be advised of the outcome in writing.

Purpose

The purpose of the Monograph Fellowship is to enable staff in the Research School of Social Sciences to have a semester of teaching relief to complete their writing work and finish a monograph for publication, while in residence at the ANU Humanities Research Centre.

Objectives

The main goals of the Monograph Fellowship are:

To promote excellence in research by supporting extended analytic research, published in a monograph, and to promote the Research School’s profile through publishing at high-quality academic presses;
To advance new and established research collaborations between the Research School and leading researchers and institutions within and outside Australia;
To enhance the national and international reputation, scope and impact of research conducted by the Research School’s staff; and
To contribute to the interdisciplinary community of national and international scholars in residence at the ANU Humanities Research Centre.

Application

Academic excellence will be the main criterion and applicants will have a proven track record of publication and research, relative to opportunity. Applicants will be academic staff who are employed by the ANU on a continuing (or continuing contingent-funded) basis, or on a fixed-term basis (provided that their current contract does not expire before the end of the current calendar year).

Applications must include:

An abstract (no more than one page) of the monograph;
Evidence of interest from a reputable academic press;
A draft of at least two chapters of the monograph;
The applicant’s CV and a one paragraph statement of the applicant’s academic achievements relative to opportunity (c. 250 words);
Endorsement from the applicant’s Head of School or Centre Director; and
A budget for the sessional teaching relief being sought.

Early career academics are strongly encouraged to apply.

It is the responsibility of the successful applicant to organise their own teaching relief.

The successful applicant shall also participate in presenting their work at one seminar in the HRC Seminar Series.

Criteria

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

The quality of the academic press;
The quality of the applicant’s academic track record, relative to opportunity; and
The quality of the draft chapters.

Fellows are expected to also provide a brief (one page) report at the end of the semester, covering their progress that was made towards their monograph’s publication, and any other work during the duration of the Fellowship.

Conditions

The Monograph Fellowship will be awarded under the following conditions:

The Fellows will be scholars in residence at the ANU Humanities Research Centre, will take up residence full-time in the Sir Roland Wilson Building, and will participate regularly in the intellectual life and activities of the HRC.
The Fellowship will fund one semester of teaching relief. Fellows are expected to remain in Canberra, and the Monograph Fellowship may not be taken concurrently with the College’s Outside Studies Program (OSP).
Successful applicants may not apply for the Monograph Fellowship in consecutive years.
No additional funding will be provided apart from the teaching relief (eg, for a book launch, or copyediting).
